Network Engineer 

Reporting to the Chief Technology Officer and based in the London Head Office. 

The role will work closely with the CTO and will have responsibility for the setting up, development and support of the Swish network. This includes the passive optical network (PON), active components / outside plant in street cabinets (OLTs), and the Data Centre function which includes aggregation, core, transit and peering.


As a start up the role will be varied with the successful candidate being asked to support a number of varied activities and will be a key member of the team, involved in the development of the business from the start. The role will also be expected to be involved in the recruitment of additional network engineers. 

The successful candidate will have worked within a service provider and have hands-on knowledge of ISP services, solutions, equipment and protocols. They must be confident communicators and possess excellent analytical and problem-solving skills. 

This role will be expected to participate in an on-call rota outside of normal business hours. 

Role Summary:

  • Build / deployment / configuration of data centre & outside plant architecture to support over 100,000 customers 

  • 2nd and 3rd line support of incidents to resolution 

  • Put in place appropriate levels of network monitoring to enable pro-active insights on matters which may impact customer service 

  • Participation in developing a best of breed network support function 

  • Securing all aspects of the network from existing and future threats 

  • Development of support processes and procedures to maximise network uptime and minimise service disruption 

  • Contribute to the development of future Enterprise level network connectivity solutions 

Key Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience of FTTH / FTTP network architecture 

  • Understanding and experience of modern service provider solutions and architectures including: 

  • Layer 3 (IP) and Layer 2 (Ethernet) 

  • Routing and switching 

  • Service Provider architecture (access / aggregation / core / transit) 

  • Data Centre architecture (leaf / spine / core / DCI) 

  • MPLS, L3VPN / L2VPN / Pseudowires 

  • eBGP, iBGP, IS-IS, OSPF 


  • DNS, DHCP, Syslog 

  • Network Monitoring 

  • Capacity Management 

  • CGNAT e.g. A10 

  • BNG 

  • Firewalls

Key Experience:

  • Over 5 years’ experience working as a network engineer within an Internet Service Provider environment. 

  • Hands on experience designing, configuring and supporting service provider networks. Able to demonstrate problem ownership at a third line support level. 

  • Experience of Juniper MX / ACX series routers and EX / QFX series switches 

  • Network security best practices 

  • Network penetration testing 

  • Troubleshooting experience to third line level 

Professional Skills and Background:

  • Ideally educated to degree level or similar 

  • Juniper networking accreditations are preferred but not essential if an appropriate level of experience has been gained 

  • Security qualifications are preferred, again, relevant experience can be a substitute
